Home movies and some documentaries are made with in-camera sound only, but professional movie-making is normally done with a separate sound recording system, which is then put together with the video images in editing. Even when in-camera sound is used, it can be manipulated separately in the editing process.

Most beginning videographers overlook the importance of sound quality. Some amateur camcorders have motors that are noisy enough to be picked up by the in-camera mic at time when the ambient sound is not loud, and so an external mic may be a good investment.
