JERRY GOLDSMITH 1929-2004 BIOGRAPHY

Jerry Goldsmith died at home on July 21, 2004, at the age of 75, after a three year battle with cancer through which he continued to create marvelous music. His perception, innovations, and dedication to serving the film made him one of a small number of truly great film composers. He gave his all to every motion picture he scored and as his daughter Carol said at his memorial, "He was his music and it was as essential to him as oxygen." In 2002, he did the brilliant score for Sum of All Fears, as well as the last of his Star Trek scores. In 2003, in an example of his amazing versatility, he did Looney Tunes: Back in Action.

Among Jerry Goldsmith's hundreds of compositions, perhaps his best known theme is the one he composed for Patton. At the memorial service, Jerry's composer son Joel Goldsmith spoke of how his father was an innovator in the use of music to explain the subtext, and how for Patton Jerry used three kinds of music to depict the three aspects of the General Patton's personality.

Jerry Goldsmith is survived by his wife, Carol, his five children Aaron, Joel, Carrie, Ellen, and Jennifer, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by a wealth of friends who will treasure his memory and miss him greatly.

Jerry's son Joel Goldsmith is a very talented composer whose compositions include the very effective and innovative score Joel did for the four hour mini-series Helen of Troy in which he conveyed in his music the dangerous inner turmoil of the characters. Joel's score was very innovative and yet stayed within the expectations of the genre. Jerry's daughter Carol has performed vocals on many of her father's scores.

AN EXCELLENT AND DETAILED ESSAY ON JERRY GOLDSMITH'S LIFE AND WORK IS IN FILM SCORE MONTHLY:

Jerrald ‘Jerry’ Goldsmith was born on February 10th, 1929, in Los Angeles. He studied the piano with Jacob Gimpel and film composition at the University of Southern California under the legendary Hungarian composer of movie music Miklós Rózsa.

Jerry Goldsmith wrote music for such 1950s and 60s TV shows as 'Wagon Train', 'Have Gun Will Travel', 'The Twilight Zone', 'Thriller', 'Dr. Kildare', and 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'.

His friend, the legendary movie composer Alfred Newman got Goldsmith the chance in 1957 to score his first film, the western 'Black Patch'.

From that beginning, Jerry Goldsmith quickly established himself as a major composer of movie music and he has written the music for over 200 films which encompass every genre. He has been nominated 17 times for an Oscar, and won for ‘The Omen’ in 1976. Among his many marvelous movie themes perhaps the best known is the one he composed for ‘Patton’.

In his seventies, Jerry Goldsmith continued to be one of the most sought after composers in the movie industry, and in 2002 he did the hit thriller ‘The Sum of All Fears’ and 'Star Trek: Nemesis’, and in 2003, "Looney Tunes: Back in Action".

JERRY GOLDSMITH FILMOGRAPHY

THE HOLLOW MAN DVD has an isolated score in 5.1 with commentary by Jerry Goldsmith, but the commentary is NOT in the Superbit version of the Special Edition.

The LEGEND DVD Collector's Edition has Jerry Goldsmith's wonderful score restored. On the DVD there is also the very inferior US theatrical release version with temp music taken from 'Psycho II' along with some fragmented pieces from Goldsmith's score. A good lesson in bad editing!
